text-align: center;">Back in the fall at the Alabama Natural Resource and Forestry Awards Banquet my wife Felicia received the top award one can receive from the State Tree Farm Committee. The award is named for a great Tree Farm Person, Doug Link. When we first got started on the State Committee Mr. Link was a great encourager and visited our property more than once. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">To receive this award was a great honor for her and me too!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">She definitely was well deserving of this award. She has spoken at the National Leadership Conference about encouraging more women to get involved in forestry through "Women's Walk in the Forest". She always helps with "Classroom in The Forest" for fifth graders on our property. Planting trees, cutting wood, prescribed burning and other management practices are some of her forestry experiences.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">So glad I get to share live with her!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEitc2rPwm84ZAePJT6pHZ-JYeryLSYDyR5XJrEYfMXJMUUWbUb9lmrgmqKbu1ydVxikzfVRLHxw5RlQ7dTeZ6zV-QmY4udMPu7M6GPnxqXmNlE31fgVOhclnCu9m8YvDDLaPG_339edD8T4Y47ZAZubFwc9HaxSevVbkvxofGOiLFb1X-amVlA-GG4g=s4128" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4128" data-original-width="3096" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEitc2rPwm84ZAePJT6pHZ-JYeryLSYDyR5XJrEYfMXJMUUWbUb9lmrgmqKbu1ydVxikzfVRLHxw5RlQ7dTeZ6zV-QmY4udMPu7M6GPnxqXmNlE31fgVOhclnCu9m8YvDDLaPG_339edD8T4Y47ZAZubFwc9HaxSevVbkvxofGOiLFb1X-amVlA-GG4g=s320" width="240" /></a></div><br /> <p></p>Dewberry Lands, LLChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01233315997918601875noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2005201689551231930.post-958347109146340192022-01-12T16:43:00.002-08:002022-01-12T16:43:25.793-08:00Prescribed Fire<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">My wife and I did a prescribed burn on 40 acres of longleaf pines. Only Native Americans can have in their possession a feather and they are required to get a special permit from the US Government. $100,000 and a year in jail is the penalty for having an eagle feather. </div><p></p>Dewberry Lands, LLChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01233315997918601875noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2005201689551231930.post-31654439960494404482021-03-01T10:07:00.000-08:002021-03-01T10:07:03.832-08:00Timber/Lumber not Equal<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5bCCB__94gVcuguvhCUnhIDVKK84SH-MtgcSz4hgyIfHIphsDjqyBF7Pa3bSor8JlJSbqivsQGC-OUAzaSsCvJ56NUKZvvrTAjG6ctLhl_XeLo1gKsUbH-etDXqZvy2i_ZFkRDU9RuOo/s800/8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5bCCB__94gVcuguvhCUnhIDVKK84SH-MtgcSz4hgyIfHIphsDjqyBF7Pa3bSor8JlJSbqivsQGC-OUAzaSsCvJ56NUKZvvrTAjG6ctLhl_XeLo1gKsUbH-etDXqZvy2i_ZFkRDU9RuOo/s320/8.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />This is an article about why timber prices are low and lumber prices are high. https://wallstreetjournal-ny-app.newsmemory.com/?publink=4561554fa<p></p>Dewberry Lands, LLChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01233315997918601875noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2005201689551231930.post-64558289989649363202020-09-16T13:01:00.003-07:002020-09-16T13:01:39.341-07:00Road Maintenance<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8JnjoH1RKOObjFe7nKGBHZ71Y6e4SERjnCbwk3Y9NwWdFXGDQCTeBXyDes1Xns9AKgdnTR7L3rIeINPruo-VNF9fNNjg5wydF32TBnwsTWrJ1uEIBYgdkuUcssRLJKMxQ6F8jm879AIc/s4128/20200829_150009.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3096" data-original-width="4128" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8JnjoH1RKOObjFe7nKGBHZ71Y6e4SERjnCbwk3Y9NwWdFXGDQCTeBXyDes1Xns9AKgdnTR7L3rIeINPruo-VNF9fNNjg5wydF32TBnwsTWrJ1uEIBYgdkuUcssRLJKMxQ6F8jm879AIc/s320/20200829_150009.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">We have been spending the majority of our time on the property cutting roads and planting fall food plots. <span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14.85px;">Back in late Spring we were informed by a friend that lives on this road where one tract of land we own is located. He told us about the fresh dumping and where it was located. My wife and I went to check on the property and saw several bags of garbage dumped on our property. With this much garbage you know they will not have all there private information deleted so we proceeded to check it out. In the garbage was their WIC receipt and their address was included on an envelope. It was a young mom that lived outside the county and I am sure someone dumped it for her. </span>My wife and I picked all the garbage up and disposed of it. We could have turned it over to authorities to handle the dumping but we chose to let it go.<br />Maybe they will do better in the future.</h4>

We burned 75 acres about two weeks ago. The weather was perfect and we were lucky to get the burn completed with all of the rain we have been having. The lower part of the duff was damp and this protected the roots. This was the first time this stand had been burned and there were places that lots of logging debris was on the ground. This stand was thinned last year and was in need of fire going through the stand.</div>

It is so important that we listen to our grandchildren. When they say they want to go hunting, hiking, or what ever reason they want to be outside we as adults need to oblige. This weekend my youngest granddaughter wanted to go hunting with granddaddy. Her older brother was going also but to a different stand. We had to look for camo and orange hats for the outing. We watched the sunrise and different birds in the field and she did get to see a doe.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
She had a great time!</div>

We were at the Alabama Landowner Conference in Prattville and there, we were able to go on a tour of two Tree Farms. One of the farms is now baling longleaf pine straw and doing well with this product. We got to see the results of several years getting his land ready to make this operation a success.</div>

<span style="text-align: center;">My wife, Felicia, recently spoke to a group of teachers at Auburn University. She spoke about private forestland owners and how their forest management benefits all of us. She shared how our forest help clean the air and most all the drinking water in our state comes down in a forest. Felicia also shared how we use our property to educate others and how she has sponsored women's events to get more ladies involved in managing their property. </span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The mountain longleaf is a tree that I would call a survivor. It has always amazed me at how these trees can grow on top of a rock. I made this picture a few weeks back along an old road bed while turkey hunting in the Talladega National Forest. Notice how the butt of the tree has spread out to support this tree that is near 100 foot in height. The roots just twist and turn to force themselves down through the rock. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As a two year old tree we use prescribed fire in a stand to help in the growth of these trees. They can survive fire and they thrive with fire. These trees have evolved into a species that nature has prepared for the environment they live in. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Their history is a great story to learn!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I made a picture this morning while turkey hunting in the National Forest of an old longleaf pine stump. You could see ax marks on the stump but it was finally cut down with a crosscut saw. You might ask, "How do I know it was with a crosscut saw?" You can always tell by the height of the stump.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I wonder where the lumber from this stump went to? Is the building it was used for still standing? Did the wood stay in Alabama or did it go up north like so much of the longleaf pine lumber? What year was it cut? How did they get the wood off of this steep mountain?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This stump is a testament to the quality of the wood in a longleaf pine. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

40 more acres in the hills of Alabama has been converted back to the native longleaf pines. The elevation these longleaf are being planted on is about 1370 feet, much different than the Coastal Plains longleaf. This tract had one of the native trees growing on it and was not harvested. The tree has a 12" diameter and was left as a testament to the trees native range. </div>

These men are the best at what they do. I enjoy trying to communicate with them while we are planting. Two men in this crew planted trees for me two years ago. They were excited to see how the trees had grown that they had planted and it gave them motivation to do a good job planting. Most of the time they never get to see the results of their hard work because they move on to a different location and never see what a site looks like later. </div>

These, over 20,000 seedlings, are off to a good start with all of the rain we have been having. They will on day make a beautiful forest where their needles will make a special music that no other pine makes when blowing in the breeze. With fire going through these every two or three years it will become a place frequented by wildlife because of the great habitat these trees provide with good management. </div>

I recently completed my term as President of the Alabama Treasure Forest Association. I conducted the business at our final state business meeting for 2018 in Pratville at the Alabama Landowners Conference. This was such an honor for me to be in a line of great presidents that have guided our organization down through the years. Our next president, Gary Cole, will be a great president for our organization. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
People usually serve two annual terms in this position but I agreed to serve only one because in November I became the State Chairman for the Alabama Tree Farm Committee. I had already made this commitment to Tree Farm early and had been serving as vice-chair for the past four years.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These are two great organizations for forest landowners having different objectives but both do great work for those they represent!</div>

2018 Classroom in the Forest is in the books! We host all the fifth graders in the county to our property each year learn the truth about the forest. They get to see a real working, sustainable, multiple use forest and get to interact with nature where this would be impossible in the classroom. </div>

We met with Congressman Rogers yesterday to discuss the Farm Bill and its impact on Rural America here in Clay County. It is so important to all rural people in ways we have not thought of.<br />
We looked and talked about how the bill helps keep our water safe and pure; how it effects jobs in our community; and how wildlife habitat is protected.Dewberry Lands, LLChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01233315997918601875noreply@blogger.com0
