American Bald Eagle

 

We were our with our youngest grandson a few weeks ago exploring our property and we found the feather of a Bald Eagle.  This was such a special find, and we had to explaining to him why we had to leave it on the ground.  He had questions but understood what this bird meant to us as Americans.  We had seen an eagle near this area before but never dreamed of seeing a feather shed by the eagle.

This was the tree we found the feather under.  We knew the eagle had been up in this tree after he had been hunting fish near the watershed lake near by.  The eagle probably enjoyed his meal in this tree.

We left the feather under the tree.  You might ask "why"?  It is illegal to have in your possession any part of eagle.  Only Native Americans can have in their possession a feather and they are required to get a special permit from the US Government. $100,000 and a year in jail is the penalty for having an eagle feather.

Road Maintenance

We have been spending the majority of our time on the property cutting roads and planting fall food plots.  A little work goes a long way in improving the eye appeal of property and helps turkeys catch grasshoppers in the Bahia  grass.  

 

Second Thinning

This was the stand about to be thinned.  It had been thinned once and we had been using prescribed fire on this parcel for several years.

This is what it looked like after the thinning.  we hope to burn this parcel this summer to get all the benefits from the thin. 

The logger that thinned this stand is one of the best!  He takes pride in his work and you don't have to wonder if it is being done correctly.  Your property always looks better after a thin when  he leaves.

Trash Dumping

Back in late Spring we were informed by a friend that lives on this road where one tract of land we own is located.  He told us about the fresh dumping and where it was located.  My wife and I went to check on the property and saw several bags of garbage dumped on our property.  With this much garbage you know they will not have all there private information deleted so we proceeded to check it out.  In the garbage was their WIC receipt and their address was included on an envelope.  It was a young mom that lived outside the county and I am sure someone dumped it for her.  My wife and I picked all the garbage up and disposed of it.  We could have turned it over to authorities to handle the dumping but we chose to let it go.
Maybe they will do better in the future.

Tree Farm National Leadership Conference

The National Tree Farm Leadership Conference was held in Baltimore, Maryland, this past year.

Felicia spoke in one of the breakout sessions about getting women involved in forestry and forest management. 

Alabama was represented by six of our state committee members that shared with others about what we do and are doing in Alabama as we lead the way for Tree Farm owners in our state and nation.
